School Culture
How do we strengthen the sense of community in our schools? Here's one concept that could be easily implemented.
Arguably the only time in the school day when all ears are listening to the same message is during school announcements. How can schools use morning announcements as a focus for both strengthening school culture and developing awareness of larger societal issues?
We’ve come up with a simple 3 part concept suitable for high schools that could be easily implemented.

- Routine announcements should be delivered by representatives from different student groups – teams, clubs, etc., with each group taking on the delivery of announcements for a limited time period (perhaps a week)
- Announcements would be followed by a Question of the Day delivered in a multiple choice format. Schools could, if they so chose, compete in a “Smartest Home Room” contest. The correct answer would be followed by a brief explanation providing context to the question. From time to time, instead of the question of the day the presentation would take the form of an opinion poll. Click here to see 40 sample questions.
- Announcements would be followed by a 15 second commercial prepared by the student group presenting the announcements.
